The Independence Pledge of Trinidad and Tobago written by Marjorie Padmore is truly a priceless gem to the citizens of this country; if it is taken to heart, we will see a better quality of life for ALL citizens.
We have reviewed it line by line and phrase by phrase. Although it was written over 40 years ago, we find the sentiments of the pledge ring ever so true even to this day.
Who pledges to whom?
We have examined the main players in this pledge: God, country and self. We, the people of Trinidad and Tobago, make a solemn pledge to God and country to dedicate our life.
I solemnly pledge to dedicate my life to the service of my God and my country.
What do we pledge?
In the Independence pledge we pledge nothing less than our life to God and our country. We see this played out in our interactions with each other in our homes, our places of work and in the streets.
How is the pledge manifested our lives?
We pledge to be compassionate, grateful and respectful to those who lead and teach us in various capacities. We recognize that this attitude leads us to be having peaceful, long lives in this land.
I will honour my parents, my teachers, my leaders and my elders and those in authority.
What are the characteristics of a person who takes the pledge solemnly?
Starting from our thoughts and manifesting in our words and our deeds we must be known as honest, peaceful people.
I will be clean and honest in my thoughts, my words and my deeds.
How and why would we aspire to reshape our country?
The secret to success in Trinidad and Tobago is working together for the greater happiness of ALL. Not just our immediate family, not just our community- ALL. Selfishness and self-centeredness which fuels dishonesty, corruption, crime and strife is our downfall. Our striving for prosperity, happiness, opportunity and freedom must be all inclusive. This is the only way we can achieve lasting honour and glory for our country.
I will strive in everything I do, to work together with my fellowmen, of every creed and race, for the greater happiness of all and the honour and the glory of my country.
